Pedestrian safety is a cornerstone of any thriving community, and in West Windsor, the need for improved roadway conditions has never been more urgent. During the Township Council meeting on November 12, residents of the Berrien City neighborhood brought forth a compelling case for immediate action to address long-standing safety issues near our high school and train station.
The Problem: Unsafe Roads and Crosswalks
Residents highlighted dangerous conditions along Alexander Road, particularly at intersections with Harris Road and Scott Avenue. Cars frequently speed, crosswalks are incomplete, and existing safety features like speed humps and signage are either inadequate or improperly installed. Compounding these issues is the neighborhood’s high pedestrian usage by residents, students, and commuters.
The statistics shared were sobering: approximately 50 motor vehicle accidents have occurred in the area over recent years, including some involving pedestrians. These accidents are preventable, but only with the right investments in infrastructure and enforcement.
Community-Led Solutions
The Berrien City Neighborhood Association proposed practical solutions:
Enhanced Crosswalks: Install pedestrian-activated flashing beacons and add missing crosswalks at Scott Avenue.
Consistent Speed Limits: Reduce speed limits to 25 MPH along Alexander Road and ensure clear signage.
Improved Intersection Design: Redesign the Harris and Alexander intersection for better safety, including flood mitigation and visibility improvements.
Traffic Studies and Long-Term Planning: Conduct updated traffic studies and implement traffic calming measures to encourage safe driving.
These changes would not only protect pedestrians but also contribute to a safer, more livable community for all residents.
Call to Action: What Can You Do?
Safety is a shared responsibility. While the township administration must prioritize infrastructure upgrades, every resident can help by:
Driving at or below speed limits, especially in pedestrian-heavy areas.
Yielding to pedestrians at crosswalks.
Advocating for investments in road safety by contacting local officials and supporting community initiatives like this one.
Let’s work together to ensure our streets are safe for everyone—whether they’re walking to school, commuting to work, or enjoying our beautiful township. It’s time for West Windsor to embrace a culture of safe and respectful driving while investing in sustainable solutions for pedestrian safety.
