New Jersey Launches Online Vote-by-Mail Applications Ahead of June Primary

New Jersey has taken an important step forward in making voting more accessible and convenient.

Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello recently announced that voters can now apply for Vote-by-Mail ballots online through the New Jersey Division of Elections. The secure online portal is live and available ahead of the June 2, 2026 Primary Election.

This change modernizes the process in a practical way. Instead of printing, mailing, or delivering a paper application, voters can now complete the process online in just a few minutes.

How to Apply

Voters can access the online application here: https://www.nj.gov/state/elections/vote-by-mail.shtml

The site provides clear, step-by-step instructions. You will need to have identifying information ready when completing your application.

The deadline to apply for a Vote-by-Mail ballot is May 26, 2026.

Plan Ahead

While the new online system makes applying easier, it does not eliminate the need to plan ahead. Waiting until the last minute adds unnecessary risk. If you are considering voting by mail, the smart move is to apply as soon as possible.

Returning Your Ballot

For those who choose to vote by mail, Mercer County strongly encourages using one of the secure ballot drop boxes located throughout the county.

These drop boxes are:

  • Secure and regularly monitored

  • Collected directly by the Mercer County Board of Elections

  • A reliable alternative to mailing your ballot

You can find a full list of drop box locations in Mercer County here: https://www.mercercounty.org/government/county-clerk/elections/vote-by-mail-drop-box-location

Using a drop box is one of the most dependable ways to ensure your ballot is received on time.

Important Note for Primary Voters

New Jersey’s Primary Elections operate by party.

  • Registered Democrats and Republicans will automatically receive their party’s ballot if they apply for Vote-by-Mail

  • Unaffiliated voters must declare a political party to participate in the Primary

If you are currently unaffiliated and plan to vote in the Primary, be sure to complete that step as part of the process.

Final Thought

This is a straightforward improvement that removes friction from the voting process. But convenience only helps if people use it.

If you plan to vote by mail this year, don’t wait. Apply early, and make a plan to return your ballot securely.
