At the upcoming West Windsor Township Council Business Meeting on September 8th, the Council will discuss a proposal to create a free food waste composting drop-off service for all residents.
This program would:
Help households manage summer waste – With garbage collection reduced to once a week during the summer, some residents have experienced odor and overflow issues. Food waste composting provides a safe, clean alternative that keeps organic waste out of trash bins.
Align with pending NJ State legislation (A4118/S203) – New Jersey is moving toward mandatory food waste reduction. By acting now, West Windsor positions itself as a leader in sustainability and compliance.
Benefit the environment – Diverting food scraps from landfills reduces methane emissions, and creates nutrient-rich compost and renewable biogas instead of harmful greenhouse gases.
Respond to community demand – Many residents have expressed interest in composting options. Currently, there is no township-wide service available, and the cost of starting this program is extremely low.
Supported by the Mercer County Improvement Authority (MCIA)
The MCIA, which oversees countywide recycling and sustainability efforts, writes: “By implementing this program, West Windsor Township could not only replicate Princeton’s success but also take a leadership role in growing Mercer County’s regional sustainability network.”
Endorsed by the New Jersey League of Conservation Voters (NJ LCV)
NJ LCV, the state’s leading nonpartisan environmental advocacy organization, notes: “This proposal would provide West Windsor residents with convenient and accessible locations to deposit food waste… establishing food waste drop-off sites will not only reduce waste and emissions but also model responsible environmental stewardship for other municipalities.”

Unfortunately, the Council President has placed this item at the very end of the meeting agenda. This means that if you wish to make a public comment, you must do so before the Council discusses the proposal. There are two public comment periods during the meeting. You are also encouraged to stay for the entire meeting so you can also hear the discussion.
Your voice matters. If this topic is of interest to you, please show your support for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable West Windsor. Together, we can make West Windsor a leader in sustainability while addressing real challenges residents face with waste management.
