West Windsor Township is a community rich in history, where neighborhoods each tell a unique story of our town’s evolution. Among them, Berrien City stands as a testament to West Windsor’s past, a neighborhood with deep roots and a close-knit community spirit. Now, we have the opportunity to celebrate and commemorate Berrien City’s legacy through a historic neighborhood sign, ensuring that its story is recognized for generations to come.

The History of Berrien City
Berrien City is one of West Windsor’s oldest residential neighborhoods, dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Named after the Berrien family, who played a significant role in shaping this area, the neighborhood has long been a cornerstone of our township’s history. Over the years, it has evolved, but it has always retained its sense of identity and community pride.
The neighborhood’s origins trace back to a time when West Windsor was transitioning from an agricultural hub into a suburban community. Many of the early homes were built to accommodate workers from nearby industries and railroads, reflecting the changing economic landscape of the region. Today, Berrien City remains a vibrant residential area, home to families who appreciate its charm, location, and deep historical roots.
There is a great overview of the history of Berrien City on the Historical Society of West Windsor website.

The Importance of Historic Neighborhood Signage
In recent years, West Windsor has made a concerted effort to acknowledge and preserve its history. Through the work of the Historical Society of West Windsor, several neighborhoods have already received historic signs, enhancing public awareness of their contributions to our town’s development. These signs serve as educational markers, connecting residents and visitors alike to the stories that shaped our community.
Now, Berrien City has the opportunity to join this initiative. A historic sign would formally recognize the neighborhood’s unique place in West Windsor’s history, reinforcing its identity and celebrating the people who have lived here over the years. This sign is not part of a historic district designation, meaning there are no building restrictions—just a visible tribute to the neighborhood’s past.
How You Can Help
Installing a historic sign for Berrien City requires a community effort. The cost of designing and installing the sign is approximately $2,500. Thanks to the support of the Historical Society of West Windsor, they already have a pathway to make this project a reality—but they need your help to make it happen.
Donations are tax-deductible and can be made in one of two ways:

A Legacy Worth Preserving
As a Councilman of West Windsor, I have seen firsthand the pride that our residents have in their neighborhoods. Recognizing Berrien City with a historic sign is a simple yet powerful way to honor our town’s past while inspiring future generations to appreciate its history.
